Mesmerizing Creations of South Indian Artisans Brought to Exhibitions by Indian Handicraft Vendors

Indian handicraft vendors are renowned for curating and showcasing a diverse range of handcrafted artefacts at fairs and exhibitions.

These vendors source exquisite handicraft products from various corners of India, each region offering its unique artistic treasures. The Indian subcontinent can be divided into five distinct zones – east, west, north, middle, and south – each contributing distinctive artefacts to the country’s vibrant handicraft exports. Among them, the artisans from South India, known for their Dravidian artistry, present an array of mesmerising handcrafted creations.

Tanjore Paintings:

Tanjore paintings, famous worldwide for their distinct painting and coloring techniques, hail from the city of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu. Craftsmen from this region employ wooden planks as the canvas for these exclusive artworks.

The central theme of Tanjore paintings revolves around a prominent figure, often a deity, with the rest of the characters arranged accordingly. Lord Vishnu and his ten avatars are commonly chosen as the central characters. The vibrant colors used in these paintings impart a lively and exquisite appearance. Classic, antique, and embossed styles are skillfully employed by the painters, resulting in ravishing Tanjore masterpieces.

Bronze Artefacts:

South Indian craftsmen supply a diverse range of gifts and decorative items to handicraft fairs, and among them, bronze artifacts from Trichy, Tamil Nadu, hold a prominent place. Craftsmen from Trichy often choose Lord Shiva as their muse, skillfully portraying different looks, moods, and poses of the deity through their bronze sculptures.

The statues also beautifully depict various stages and postures of Lord Ganesha. These decorative figurines are hollow inside, making them lighter and more convenient for buyers and vendors to carry around.

Pearl Jewelry:

Hyderabad, known as the ‘City of Pearls,’ offers an array of fashionable jewelry and accessories at handicraft fairs. Talented jewelry designers in the city use cultured pearls to create exquisite and affordable pearl ornaments. While white, cream, and pink pearls are commonly used, designers also incorporate black, yellow, and blue pearls to add vibrancy to their creations.

The specialty of Hyderabad craftsmen lies in crafting jewelry from uncut pearls, resulting in unique and eye-catching designs. A necklace made of baroque or irregularly shaped black pearls is enough to make anyone the center of attention.

Bidri Work:

The artisans of Bidar in Karnataka are renowned for their exceptional Bidri artwork, a type of metal handicraft. Using an alloy composed of 90% zinc and 10% copper, craftsmen skillfully create Bidri artifacts. They employ a special earth from Bidar for oxidization, which gives the items their characteristic color.

Silver inlays are then used to design the artifacts before dipping them into a special solution, preserving the glow of the silver while coloring the alloy. This technique results in an array of stationery products and decorative items, adorned with intricate patterns of plants, stars, flowers, animals, and abstract motifs.

Woodcraft:

Tamil Nadu is famed for its innovative handcrafted items made from sandalwood or rosewood. The craftsmen from Tirupati expertly carve idols of Lord Venkateshwara using sandalwood, while those from Salem excel in crafting miniature educational toys and games.

Indian handicraft vendors bring these exclusive articles to various exhibitions, showcasing the rich heritage of South Indian craftsmanship.
